Apocalyptic Imaginaries in the Age of AI
This project, currently in its preliminary stage, explores how religious apocalyptic frameworks are being reimagined and secularized within contemporary discourses surrounding AI, especially artificial generative intelligence (AGI), the technological singularity, and AI-driven “end times.” I am interested in how longstanding theological ideas about revelation, salvation, and catastrophe resurface in ostensibly secular conversations about technological futures.
During my undergraduate studies, coursework in religion shaped the way I began to think about how emerging technologies might be interpreted and adopted differently based on religious views. In the context of overwhelmingly fearful AI narratives, this project asks whether these anxieties reflect a continuation of religious apocalyptic thinking rather than a break from it, and how digital eschatology shapes public imagination, ethical debates, and technological governance.
What’s Innovative / Interesting
This project connects religious studies with contemporary AI and technology discourse, an area that remains underexplored. Furthermore, it bridges theology, sociology, and media studies to interrogate moral panic around AI
It frames AI “doomsday” narratives as secularized forms of apocalyptic theology
My Role

Conceptual development of the project in dialogue with the supervisor
Curated and annotated a research bibliography spanning religious studies, media theory, and AI discourse
Synthesized complex theological and theoretical frameworks into accessible research materials
Supported early-stage research with the aim of enabling future studies
